Study in Japan
July 30, 2025Studying Japanese in Japan: Short or Long Term?

Are you dreaming of studying Japanese in Japan but don’t know which type of course to choose? Don’t worry! Today we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about the differences between short-term and long-term courses. Because yes, there is a big difference, and it depends a lot on your goals, your time, and your budget. So sit back and let’s break it down.
Short-term courses: an intense taste of Japan
Short courses typically last between 2 weeks and 3 months. They are designed for those who want to experience studying in Japan but can’t stay long. These programs are ideal if:
- You want to improve your Japanese quickly and in a short amount of time
- You have limited vacation time (hello, university students and workers!)
- You want to get to know the country before committing to a long course
- You are interested in combining classes with sightseeing
Advantages:
- You don’t need a student visa (you can come with a tourist visa in most cases)
- Flexible start dates
- Smaller groups and a more dynamic approach
- Perfect for testing your motivation
But beware:
- Language progress will be limited by time.
- Not all short courses have the same level of intensity.
- You might want more (and that happens A LOT).
Long-Term Courses: True Immersion
Long-term courses are programs lasting from 6 months to 2 years, designed for those who truly want to master the language and enjoy a more comprehensive experience. These courses require a student visa and are perfect if:
- Quieres alcanzar un nivel alto de japonés (intermedio o avanzado)
- Estás considerando estudiar en una universidad japonesa o trabajar en Japón
- Buscas una experiencia de vida en Japón más profunda y estructurada
- Puedes dedicarte al estudio a tiempo completo
Advantages:
- Real and solid language progress
- Access to more resources and support from the school
- Possibility of legally working part-time (yes, you can work!)
- You can make friends from all over the world and build your network in Japan
Things to keep in mind:
- The application process is longer (but that’s what we’re here for!)
- It requires commitment: time, effort, and a little extra money
- It’s ideal to have a clear goal (JLPT exam, university admission, job search, etc.)
So, which one is for you?
Short course if:
- You’re just starting out with Japanese and want to experience what Japan feels like.
- You only have a few weeks available.
- You’re looking for an express cultural and educational experience.
Long-term course if:
- You have serious language goals.
- You want to live in Japan on a more stable footing.
- You’re willing to invest time and effort into your personal and academic growth.
