Tips for enjoying your first trip to Japan

If you’re preparing for your first trip to Japan, it’s normal to feel a mix of emotions. You might be excited to visit a country you’ve seen in videos, anime, and on social media, but also nervous about facing a different language and a new culture.

Nerves before your first trip to Japan are normal.

When I decided to study in Japan, I wondered things like: What if I don’t understand much of the language? Will I be able to make friends? Will I be able to adapt?

To begin with, Japan is one of  the most organized countries I’ve ever visited. Although everything seems complicated at first, many things are designed to make daily life easier, even as a foreigner: Train stations have clear signage, many machines (like ATMs) offer options in several languages, and best of all, you’ll always find people willing to help you, even if they don’t speak the same language.

Something that helped me a lot during my first few days was maintaining an open and positive attitude. For example, if I got lost on the train, I took the opportunity to explore new stations and learn new routes. Instead of worrying about making mistakes, I decided to learn from every situation.

Adapting takes time (and that’s okay)

Another tip is not to put too much pressure on yourself. Adapting takes time, especially in a country with a different culture. It’s advisable to relax and complete all the procedures step by step without stress (this can reduce the margin of error).

Also, make the most of your daily life; learn from every step you take, every sign you see… it’s a lot of fun!

Don’t be afraid to speak Japanese

Regarding the language, don’t worry if you don’t yet feel confident with your Japanese. You’re going to Japan precisely to learn; the important thing is to be willing to practice it every day.

An Experience That Will Help You Grow

Traveling to Japan for the first time might seem like a big challenge, but it can also become one of the most enriching experiences of your life. You’ll meet new people, develop independence, improve your language skills, and discover abilities you may not have known you had.
