However, one thing we have learned from advising students traveling to Japan each year is that there is no single “ideal” school for everyone. The best choice depends on your goals, lifestyle, and future plans.

Therefore, before choosing a school, we recommend considering the following aspects.

1. Define your primary goal for studying Japanese in Japan.

Japanese language schools generally offer two types of courses: academic and general.

Academic courses focus on preparing students to apply for undergraduate, graduate, or vocational school (*senmon gakkō*) programs after completing their Japanese studies. Once you reach intermediate levels, schools offer elective subjects to help you prepare for the JLPT or EJU exams. They also provide guidance on selecting institutions, preparing application documents, and practicing for interviews.

Keep in mind that with this type of program, the visa duration depends on your chosen start date, as higher education programs in Japan begin in April. Consequently, students wishing to maximize their stay often choose to start their studies at that time.

On the other hand, general courses cater to students with different objectives. Some wish to experience studying and living in Japan before returning home, while others aim to develop the language skills needed to enter the Japanese job market.

In these programs, schools provide guidance on Japanese workplace culture, assistance with resume writing, job interview preparation, and job-hunting advice. Unlike academic-focused courses, the visa duration can be extended to two years regardless of your start date. This means that starting in January, April, July, or October works perfectly if you want to reach an advanced level and apply for a work visa.

2. Research the characteristics of each school

While all schools share the goal of teaching Japanese, each has its own unique strengths and features.

Some stand out for their conversational approach in the classroom. Others offer an international atmosphere with a diverse mix of nationalities. There are also schools that provide specialized programs, such as business Japanese or courses focused on the visual arts.

For instance, institutions like ARC Academy (Iidabashi), Kyoto Minsai, and Akamonkai offer specific business Japanese courses for students who have reached intermediate or advanced proficiency levels.

Rather than simply looking for the “best” school, it is worth identifying the one that aligns with your personal and professional goals.

3. Consider the city where you would like to live
